Men who smoke marijuana may experience Gynecomastia.
The year of my high school graduation was marked by a profound medical finding…”Doobies Make Boobies”. In 1972 The New England Journal of Medicine published a study linking the imbalance in testosterone levels due to smoking cannabis and Gynecomastia. Smoking pot ,it was sighted, lowers testosterone and causes swelling around the nipples. Much publicity and lots of conjecture followed.
Fast forward forty two years. With a 5% increase in male breast reduction surgeries last year and access to medical marijuana on the rise, excess breast tissue – or “man breasts” and plastic surgery are back in the news. Dr. Anthony Youn of Detroit states, (although not completely supported by research), marijuana use is a plausible cause for the 33%-41% of male pot smokers (ages 25 to 44), 60% of teens and 60% of men over 50 who experience the condition of gynecomastia. The condition often resolves itself, some individuals seek plastic surgery. In his column for CNN Dr. Youn explained, “For this reason, the majority of plastic surgeons I’ve consulted with routinely inquire with their gynecomastia patients about cannabis use and recommend they stop smoking pot immediately.”
Developing trend…conclusion: TBD.
